Silent junction
At a safe junction, each participant silently studies the map and landscape, then points to one piece of evidence. The group hears every observation before discussing the route.
Activities with a reason
Choose an activity because it supports a clear learning purpose, not because it fills time. Keep instructions brief, offer different participation roles and state where challenge is optional.
Weather window
Pairs compare the forecast with cloud, wind and surface observations. They name one condition that would cause the group to change the plan.
Rotating trail roles
Offer map holder, feature spotter, timekeeper and group-connection roles. Adults retain safeguarding and final safety decisions.
Notice, choose, learn
Close with one observation, one choice and one lesson. Speaking is optional; participants can write or pass.
Before you begin
Assess the venue and activity under your organisation's procedures. Explain boundaries, stop signals, photo consent and the right to pass. Adapt communication and movement rather than singling out participants.
